Daniel Suen is a visual communication specialist, video journalist and public affairs practitioner based in Hong Kong with 7+ years of experience in storytelling. Prior to his tenure in the South China Morning Post, he spent four years at Agence France-Presse as a video journalist and a TV producer covering the Asia-Pacific region. His videos and photos have been used on screen and in print by renowned international media, including BBC, Al Jazeera and the New York Times.

Daniel have shot videos for SCMP’s original content team in Hong Kong, pitching, writing filming and producing short-form stories and documentaries about everything from politics to cultural events.

His video expertise had also been utilised in the production of promotional materials for the company’s anniversary events and shooting of various business interviews.

He also regularly contributed to breaking news monitoring and turns around quick, responsive edits of news video clips for SCMP’s YouTube channel. His contribution in both original production and breaking news clips has exceeded 6 million views on YouTube, helping to grow SCMP’s Channel from under 3 million subscribers to over 4 million.

His previous work at AFP involved shooting and planning video coverage in Hong Kong. He also coordinated video from across Asia-Pacific and edited daily news clips for the video wire.

He covered the city’s pro-democracy protests extensively on the ground, and the subsequent political turmoil the follows. Other than politics, he also covers art and cultural topics.

Outside of Hong Kong, he covered the 2019 Trump-Kim summit in Hanoi, Vietnam and the Christchurch mosque shooting in New Zealand.

He also previously worked for Radio Television Hong Kong as a producer, when he shot video news and edited daily news coverage for the public broadcaster’s English news service.

He obtained his bachelor degree from The University of Hong Kong with double majors in Journalism and English literature.

He prefers to shoot with his Panasonic S5IIX and S1 cameras and is adept with drones and other secondary cameras to tell an extensive range of visual stories. He is also an expert with professional broadcast camcorders for different coverage needs.
